ARCS Instructional Design Model

 

ARCS stands for Attention, Relevance, Confidence, and Satisfaction.

 


 

As depicted in this short, informative video, ARCS is an instructional design model focused on motivating students for more effective learning:  

 

 

Why the ARCS model?

 

In the booming age of technology, educators are looking for more contemporary ways to motivate their students in what can be a stereotypically "boring" face-to-face classroom setting.

 

When you hear the phrase "Classroom Lecture" do you think of this?

 

 

Many students do...

 

 

How can the ARCS model help?

 

Attention

 

You must not only capture your learners attention but sustain it.  You can stimulate and motivate by enhancing classroom lecture with a variety of strategies including but not limited to role-playing, case studies, creative assignments, simulations, and interactive software. Using more than one can enhance different learning styles.

Relevance

 

Giving the student an opportunity to learn the material in a real-life scenario. This is beneficial because it motivates learners to prepare for real-life scenarios encountered outside class. In turn your learners will quickly realize the relevance of the content they are studying.

 


 

Confidence

 

Adjusting material and presenting it in a way that the learner can understand, which instills confidence and reinforces motivation.  

 

 

 

Satisfaction

 

An educator must be able to garner satisfaction from their learners.  This can happen in many ways including:

Positive feedback from faculty and peers.

Progress reports to reflect strong and weaker points.

Mastering the material by participating in simulations and tasks instills satisfaction that the learner can apply the material.
